November 3, 2008 GENERALS MARCH ON AS STEELMEN TUMBLE. Corby Town 2 Chesham United 3 FA Trophy Second Round Saturday 1st November Match Report From The Rockingham Triangle By Glenn Lawrence
Two goals inside the opening 4 minutes paved the way for Midlands One Division opponents Chesham United to progress at the expense of Corby Town who were unceremonious dumped out of the FA Trophy by their ten man visitors at a windy Triangle.
British Gas Business Southern League Premier Division high flyers Corby Town took a break from league action as they played hosts to fellow Midlands Division side Chesham United in the FA Trophy at a cloudy and damp Rockingham Triangle.Corby Town manager Graham Drury this week called for the fans to come to the Rockingham Triangle on Saturday and get behind the Steelmen in the FA Carlsberg Trophy game against Chesham United.Corby has scored 15 times in the last four away outings.Drury said," I don't want to make an issue of our home form because it's not too bad. Obviously at the moment our away form stands out as being tremendous - particularly with last Saturday's 5-1 win at Bedford Town who were unbeaten at home in the league.Teams come and sit behind the ball at the Rockingham Triangle. Therefore, the goals have not been flowing as freely as they are away. However, it will come.At home or away we can pass the ball around to create a lot of chances.People always say your home form needs to be strong while picking up as many away points as possible. Sometimes you can put more pressure on by talking about home form when you would still get promotion by winning every away game.Although we lost 1-0 at home last time, that was down to bad refereeing decisions, and we should have won it. The official put his hand up afterwards and agreed he had made two horrendous mistakes which cost us. I am hoping for a big crowd on Saturday by hitting the 400 mark for the first time this season. Those figures can make an even better atmosphere and turn The Triangle into a fortress.I know it's up to us to get the results. My dream is to see that Main Stand full before the end of the season."Corby Town manager Graham Drury made no changes from last weekends side who subjected Bedford Town to a 5-1 league drubbing while visitors Chesham United made one change from the side who edged out Barton Rovers by the only goal seven days ago as Josh Cooper replaced Steve Crawley up-front.Corby Town had ex Chesham striker Dave Brennan making this third appearance after the Steelmen became Brennan's thirteenth club.
In a strong swirling wind Chesham United broke the deadlock after just two minutes when Dom Marsala rounded the goalkeeper to hit home from close range after good between Dave Fotheringham and Danny Burnell .With the home side still reeling from that early setback David Fotheringham doubled the visitors lead on 4 minutes as he latched onto a clearance with acres of space Forthingham hit home past stranded goalkeeper Osborn as the shell shocked Steelmen found themselves further behind inside the opening 5 minutes.Ollie Burgess reduced the deficit on 14 minutes when he fired the ball home high into the roof of the net at the far post following Mark Duckett's well struck free-kick which was headed on by Brennan.Just seconds later Diggin's cross found Burgess who forced Underwood to smartly save at point blank range,However it was the visitors who went further ahead on 29 minutes through John Kyriacou.Corby was awarded a 37th minute penalty after a shove on Burgess by Josh Cooper inside the penalty area, after consulting one Linesman on the main stand side Referee Feerick took no action against Cooper but his attention was drawn to the opposite touch-line after that decision incensed Generals Manager Andy Leese who's protest too the Assistant on the far touch-line resulted in Leese being dismissed from the dugout and sent too the main stand, after a delay of four minutes, from the resulting Diggin spot-kick Chesham goalkeeper Underwood pushed the penalty onto the post the loose rebound found Diggin who made no mistake at the second time of asking.Chesham was reduced to ten men on the stroke of half-time as top-scorer Danny Burnell was red card for a second book-able offence following a harsh challenge, having already been booked for dissent Burnell was sent for an early bath.
Corby Town failed to make their numerical advantage paid in the second half as the visitors defender well to soak up pressure but the Steelmen rarely caused many troubles for Chesham shot-stopper Underwood, Steve Towers long range powerful drive fly just over the crossbar while Tony Battersby miscued his shot, Burgess drive wide of the far post at the other end only a fine save from Osborne denied Cox in the closing stages as Cox failed to seize his chance from 8 yards out with only home goalkeeper Osborn to beat. All in all the Steelmen never really fully recovered from the early set-backs,Six bookings tells the story of a highly competitive Cup encounter that threatened to boil over at times Chesham would have been pleased with a draw and a second bite of the cherry on paper but carved out a fantastic display against a Corby side who could not capitalise in the second half, a scramble inside the box in the closing stages saw Corby Sub Watt go close however Underwood superbly smothered the ball at his feet.279 supporters watched an enjoyable and entertaining game but this has to rate as one of the low points to date in what has otherwise been a good season for Corby, Take nothing away from Chesham those two goals gave them the edge but in the end Corby had their chances to salvage something from. What must rate as a disappointing performance from many spectators final score Corby Town 2 Chesham United 3.

October 5, 2008 COOKS ON-FIRE AS CODICOTE ARE HIT FOR SIX ! .jpg) Cogenhoe United 6 Codicote 0 FA Vase First Round Saturday 4th October 2008 Match Report From Compton Park By Glenn Lawrence
United Counties Eagle Bitter Premier Division side Cogenhoe United progressed in the FA Vase as they hit Hertfordshire Senior Counties Side Codicote for Six at a windswept Compton Park, Three goals either side of the break sealing a comfortable and comprehensive victory for a Darren Collins side.
Cooks Manager Darren Collins made just one change too the side that drew 2-2 at Willen Road on Tuesday night against Newport Pagnell Town as Scott Cross replaced Stuart Goosey, a performance which saw the Cooks surrender a two goal lead inside the closing 12 minutes and indebted to goalkeeper Darren Watts for saving their blushes with a late penalty save.Having knocked out Langford in the Second Qualifying Round 2-1 Cogenhoe United Manager Darren Collins was searching for a return to winning ways after his sides recent dip in form which has seen the Cooks dropping points having drawn two out of their last three league encounters.Meantime Herts Senior County Side Codicote arrived at Compton Park having been beaten just once this season Manager Dan Kennoy making two changes from the side that won 4-1 last weekend against Mile End Sports as Joel Korocz and Richard Griffiths replaced Tom Parker and Steve Teal in the starting line-up.Having knocked out Combined Counties side Bedfont 3-2 in the Second Qualifying Round thanks to Substitute Mark Jones 90th minute winner both sides were looking at the lucrative prospects of collecting a pay cheque of £1,000 and more importantly a place in the hat for Mondays Second Round Draw for winning today's tie.
Cogenhoe United took the lead on 5 minutes through Scott Cross and only a fine finger tipped one save from Statham in the visitors goal denied the goals from going further ahead on 18 minutes the loose ball falling to Cross who could not capitalize with his header.Again with the home side forcing the pressure Cross forced Statham to save well at the near post as the sprawling keeper smother his low drive.Codicote struggled to create chances but wasted a good chance on 31 minutes when they failed to capitalize on a 20 yard free-kick which Guiseppe D'Anglo blazed over the crossbar.Cogenhoe doubled their lead on 40 minutes when a corner from the left wing found Codicote goalkeeper Gary Statham punching thin air the ball sailed past towards the back post for Jack Ashton too hit home low into the net from close range.Scott Cross fired Cogenhoe United further ahead on 43 minutes when he hooked the ball over the head of advancing goalkeeper Statham who was left in mans land on the edge of the penalty, which all but ended Codicote's FA Vase ambitions.
Full credit to Cogenhoe they kept going and moved up a gear as the home side enjoyed a good start to the second half and within seven minutes of the restart found themselves further ahead as Cassidy's low shot was palmed away at full stretch by Statham only as far as Darren Frost who hit home low into the net from 8 yards out.Only the woodwork denied the hosts another goal on 61 minutes as Herbert's header following Cassidy's cross from the right cannoned off the near upright.Darren Frost added goal number five on 72 minutes after rounding sprawling Statham in the visitors goal to tuck the ball home into the net.Scott Cross hit Codicote for Six completing his hat-trick on 87 minutes when he fired home from 20 yards out his well struck shot sailing into the net via the crossbar .Some sort of record may have been set here at Compton Park as the Referee simultaneously brandished Yellow Card after Yellow Card and booked four Codicote players in succession and to cap a miserable afternoon for the visitors Pat Alcide was sent off for a second book-able offence in the closing stages but all in all this was a poor performance from a Codicote side who never really started today, struggled to create chances and cope with the very strong swirling windy conditions at an exposed Compton Park.
A comfortable and comprehensive victory for the Cooks against a Codicote side who rarely threatened much in the way of notable goal attacks throughout the whole 90 minutes as the visitors undertook a damage limitation exercise ultimately it could have been a bigger goal winning margin for Cogenhoe United especially had the referee seen Champleovier being caught by the boot of Statham inside the penalty area just one of a number of incidents the match officials failed to notice along with the outstretched arm that clattered Ashton in the face,An enjoyable and entertaining game amid the gale force conditions however thankfully the deluge of rain stayed away until after the final whistle, which could not come soon enough for the visitors as they went out of the FA Vase thanks to some clinical finishing. All eyes now on Mondays draw as the Cooks prepare for their next encounter against Kettering Town in the Hillier Cup at Compton Park on Tuesday evening.

September 27, 2008 SAINTS PRODUCE IMPRESSIVE FA CUP DISPLAY AT BANBURY ROAD. Southam United 1 Atherstone Town 1 FA Cup Second Quliflying Round Saturday 27th September 2008 Match Report From Banbury Road by Glenn Lawrence Midlands Combination hosts Southam United produced a impressive display to match and hold Southern Leaguers opponents Atherstone Town in the FA Cup as both sides refused to surrender their unbeaten records in a gripping Cup Tie which could have gone either way. Southam United's history-making FA Cup campaign continued as they took their place in the Second Qualifying Round playing hosts too unbeaten Southern League high flyers Atherstone Town at Banbury Road.It is the first time Saints have ever reached this far in the famous cup competition, and they will have their sights focused on causing an upset against Atherstone who are currently second in BGB Southern League Midlands One table - two steps above Southam in the football pyramid. With United's FA Vase adventure coming to an abrupt end following a 2-0 defeat in extra-time at Dudley United just seven days ago disappointed Saints boss Barry Shearsby revealed: “Only two or three of our players performed and Dudley wanted the win more than we did the longer the game went on.I can only think that too many minds were already on the FA Cup match which is not acceptable.” Meantime Atherstone Town arrived following a 2-1 success over Woodford United a far from convincing win for the Adders, who were made to sweat for all three league points in the final 20 minutes of last Saturday Byfield Road victory and a mid-week league encounter at Sheepy Road which saw the Adders beat Soham Town Rangers 2-0 courtesy of goals either side of the break from Luke Barlow and Lee Greenway. Tom Friend nearly broke the deadlock blazing over from 12 yards out before putting the saints ahead on 39 Minutes as he latched onto Stefan Jones through ball following a good run, Friend hitting home low into the far corner of the net from 15 yards out. With United still celebrating the Adders hit straight back to level the score within a minute as Storer found Barlow who hit home from close range the ball being hooked over Saints goalkeeper Manuel. Adders had the better of the opening exchanges with leading sharpshooter Luke Barlone twice going close but as the half wore on it was Southam who began to find the better movement Opportunities were carved out at either end Lee Greenway hitting post for the visitors while Friend who was sent off for two book-able offences in the 74th minute, was unable to find the net following good work by Chris Hanrahan.Stef Jones could have won it for Southam United, but he fired straight at visiting keeper Williams, An evenly match Cup tie with clear cut chances at a premium means it' s all to play for on Tuesday Nights in the reply at Sheepy Road and although Atherstone Town on Paper will be favourites to progress in the FA Cup anyone who has witnessed the games at Woodford and Southam will not be convinced the Adders are not beatable however creating clear cut chances has been a problem for the Adders in these two games and on today's showing there will not have been too much to worry Saints Manager Barry Shearsby from this Adders side and as United head to North Warwickshire all the pressure is on the Adders to get a positive result from a tricky banana skin cup tie, 247 supporters witnessed the game at Banbury Road on a lovely Sunny afternoon ultimately Southam were well worthy of a second bite of the cherry as Atherstone Town failed to make their numerical advantage of the extra player pay in the closing 15 minutes, Friend was perhaps rather fortunate not to have been red carded earlier on after squaring up to Atherstone opponent, However both sides will fancy their chances on Tuesday night as they lok for a cash bonzare and a home tie in the next round. September 20, 2008 EARLY GOALS SEES ADDERS BITE .jpg) Woodford United 1 Atherstone Town 2 BGB Southern League Midlands Division Saturday 19th September 2008 Match Report from Byfield Road By Glenn Lawrence Two goals inside the opening 10 minutes paved the way for Atherstone Town to extend their unbeaten league record to Seven games against Woodford United at Byfield Road. With the Woodford United having pulled off an early shock in Suffolk just 14 days ago after defeating newly switched high flyers AFC Sunbury, Woodford United returned to Southern League Midlands Division action following a seven day break at Byfield Road as they hosted Atherstone Town.Four Points from their last two outings see's the Reds over turning a disappointing start in-which Manager Mark O'Callaghan's side slipped to three straight opening defeats.Meantime United faced a tough challenge as unbeaten Warwickshire visitors Atherstone Town arrived having dispossessed of Unibond Outfit Hednesford Town last weekend in the FA Cup the Adders digging a 2-1 hole for the Pitmen to fall down.Reds Team Chief Mark O'Callaghan included new signing Richard Adams formally with Leamington upfront in place of Dave Lynton while Rob Brassington reverted too the subs bench in favour of Adam Layton, Adders Manager Jimmy Ginnelly made just one change from the side that knocked Hednesford Town out of the FA cup as the suspended Dominic Reece replaced Lee Greenway at Left Back. On a glorious late summers afternoon in Northamptonshire Atherstone Town kicked off, a mix-up in the home defence as early as the 3rd minute nearly gifted the visitors a goal before Atherstone Town took the lead on 5 minutes when the home defence failed to close down Luke Edwards who rounded two defenders to fire home low into the net from 25 yards out beyond a static Paul Dipple in the home goal. With the Reds still reeling from that early set-back the visitors doubled their lead on 10 minutes when Ashley Wells glancing the ball home from 18 yards out following Tom Bates cross.Storer wasted a good possibility firing his free-kick over the crossbar on 36 minutes before his next effort nearly put Atherstone Town futher ahaed however only a fine save by Dipple in the home goal denied Storer on 44 minutes as the United goalkeeper pushed around the far post, with both hands, Stotrers well struck 20 yard free-kick.A disappointing, first 45 minutes saw the home side playing the price for allowing the Adders to much time and space. Chris Turrin going close firing wide on 61 minutes for the visitors before Richard Adams at the other end reduced the deficit on 77 minutes heading home from 3 yards out following a corner from the right that gave United some hope as they rallied towards the end. The Adders nearly increased their lead when Everitts free-kick was headed wide and Storer went close.Woodford created very little in the way of chances to test visiting goalkeeper Williams who remained a mere spectator for much of the game against an Adders side who failed to make the most of their guilt edge chances ultimately Atherstone's winning margin could and in all honesty should have been greater against a Woodford side who paid the price for a slack opening 45 minutes but ultimately could have salvaged a draw.

September 6, 2008 TWO LATE GOALS SEAL VICTORY FOR UCL LEADERS CORBY STEWART & LLOYDS AGAINST TEN MAN DESBOROUGH TOWN Desborough Town 2 Corby Stewarts & Lloyds 4 Eagle Bitter United Counties League Premier Division Saturday 6th September 2008 Match Report from The Waterworks Grounds By Glenn Lawrence
Two goals inside the final eleven minutes secured maximum points for unstoppable Corby Stewart & Lloyds In a match much closer than the final score-line suggests an explosive action packed second half produced six goals as Corby Stewart & Lloyds extended their unbeaten winning start to five games against ten man Desborough who had Danny Rogers instantly dismissed mid-way through the first half.
Corby Stewart & Lloyds made four changes from the side which knocked out Ryman League opponents Corinthian Casuals out of the FA Cup seven days ago meantime hosts Desborough Town under new managerial duo Dave Williams and Frank Benjamin were looking forward to build on their first victory of the season ascertained two 14 days ago against Bourne Town in their last game.
Clear cut chances were few and fair between as both sides battled it out Desborough had Danny Rogers instantly dismissed on 25 minutes for a studs-up challenge which flattened the visitors Stuart McClarity. Desborough's John Quade failed to capitalise on a free-kick, for the hosts, who subject the visitors to a good spell of late pressure in the closing stages of the first half.
Desborough Town took the lead on 46 minutes when Iain Blaike hit home from 8 yards out following a good run which ended in a well executed goal however the hosts lead was short-lived as the visitors hit back through Paul Caswell following a corner which the home side failed to clear.Again set pieces were the home sides undoiung as Mark Forbes put the visitors ahead when the home defence were undone by another corner on 65 minutes.Desborough Town equalised on 68 minutes when Michael Tolton slid in, to poke the ball home from 6 yards out following an inch perfect cross from the left, Tolton's outstretched boot poking the ball home low into the net .Corby S&L restored their lead through Paul Doherty on 79 minutes when smashed the ball before Dominic Johnson added goal number four in spectacular fashion for the visitors on 82 minutes when he went horizontal to flick the ball home with a splendid acrobatic header.Home goalkeeper Tom Smith pulled off a string off fine saves to deny the visitors through-out the afternoon late on he pushed Phil caswell well struck effort around the near post however Desborough had their chances to take something from this encounter.
An enjoyable and entertaining game played in a heavy second half rain which was a credit to UCL Football despite having the numerical advantage in the first half the visitors failed to capitalise with their extra player and less than thirty seconds after the restart suffered a wake-up call.A Third Red Card of the season never helped Desborough Town's cause as Rogers was dismissed, Desborough having had Matty O'Neill red carded twice in their opening five games.

September 1, 2008 SHRIEVES SECURES FA CUP GLORY FOR NEWPORT PAGNELL TOWN Newport Pagnell Town 1 Cirencester Town 0 FA Cup Preliminary Round Saturday 31st August Match Report From Willen Road By Glenn Lawrence
A Goal after just six minutes from Vinny Shrieves earnt Eagle Bitter United Counties league side Newport Pagnell Town Cup Glory as they dumped out of the FA Cup Southern Leaguers South West visitors Cirencester Town.
Having knocked out VTFC 2-0 in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round from the Sydenham's Wessex League Premier Division, Eagle Bitter United Counties League side Newport Pagnell Town played hosts to Cirencester Town from the Southern League South & West Division. Back to backs wins for the Swans by two goals to nil against VTFC and League opponents Holbeach United saw them enter the game full of confidence following an opening day 3-0 away defeat at the hands of St Neots Town. The visitors securing their first league win of the season from four outings away at Bishops Cleeve 2-1, having drawn against Gosport Borough and Uxbridge, four points out of a possible six in the last two games come on the back off a heavy 5-2 mauling by Truro City Both teams taking a break from league action for what on paper looked likely to be an interesting Cup tie at Willen Road. The winners of this tie receiving £1,500 in prize money and will more importantly a place in the hat for the First Qualifying Round draw which will include clubs from the British Gas Business League and Ryman League Premier Divisions.Cirencester Town manager Adi Viveeash made just one change from the side that earnt victory against local rivals Bishop Cleeve as Nathan Haisley was replaced by Rob Dean while his opposite number Terry Shrieves kept the same starting line-up which beat Holbeach united in the Eagle Bitter United Counties League last weekend.
Newport Pagnell Town clinched what later proved to be the match winning goal after just 6 Minutes as the visitors failed to close down Jordan Spruce who burst clear the ball finding its way too Darren Lynch ho in-turn found, Vinny Shrieves who hit home low into the net.Cirencester Town could have levelled on 8 minutes when Pugh's deep cross towards the far post was headed back across the goal only for Etheridge to fire wide of the post. Newport Pagnell failed to capitalise of a well placed free-kick on the edge of the box which Danny Nicholls fired against Town's defensive wall on 14 minutes.A clash of heads midway through the first half left Swans forward Darren Lynch with a nasty gash Lynch looking in some trouble with bloody streaming from his head wound after some patch up work by the Town Physio Gary Murphy Lynch reappeared sporting a neat looking headband but looking rather mummified. On 34 minutes Heaths low 15 yard drive from the edge of the penalty area was safely scooped up by Howarth in the home goal.A guilt edged chance on the stroke of half time saw Alsop blazed over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy from just three yards out following an inch perfect cross from Pugh.
Only a flying save from Howarth in the home goal denied the visitors eight minutes after the restart as the hosts goalkeeper turned around the near post Heaths shot following Spalding cross.Just a minute later as the visitors piled on more pressure only a superb reflex save from Howarth denied the visitors as the home goalkeeper pushed the ball over the crossbar after Town failed to clear a Heath's free-kick. Again the Cirencester had their chances Alsop heading over the crossbar on 57 minutes and Heath fired wide of the post before Justin Alsop's shot hit the legs of Swans goalkeeper Howarth. A good closing ten minutes spell nearly earnt the hosts another goal on 85 minutes good work by ex Northampton Town veteran Aidy Mann saw him threaded the ball through to McDonald but from a tight, by-line angle two yards in, his shot from the edge of the penalty area landed on the roof of the net at the far upright. Mitten thumped the crossbar from 8 yards out following McDonald's cross late on and Cirencester's Minturn was rather fortunate the Referee only produced a yellow card following his tangle with Armstrong in the final minute.Andy Minturn had a goal ruled out following a corner which did not come into play inside the final 15 minutes but on a bright and warm Buckinghamshire afternoon its the underdogs of Newport Pagnell Town who progress.
A poor performance from the visitors saw them exit from the FA Cup at the first hurdle they had their chances throughout the game at time's Newport were forced to pack their defence, Swans goalkeeper Howarth pulling off a string of fine saves to too deny the visitors ultimately Newport nearly could have added too their winning margin only the crossbar denying Drew Mitten who looked lively and dangerous throughout the second half.An enjoyable and entertaining game from a neutral perspective at Willen Road on out first every visit

August 26, 2008 GOAL-LESS STALEMATE EARNS BONES AND REDS FIRST POINT OF THE NEW SEASON Woodford United 0 Rothwell Town 0 BGB Midlands One Bank Holiday Monday 25th August 2008 Match Report from Byfield Road By Glenn Lawrence A goalless stalemate at Byfield Road earnt both teams their first point of the season in a game which saw both sides creating chances to seal all three points only the woodwork and good goal-keeping by Paul Dipple thwarted the Bones while the Reds could have stolen victory in the final minutes through Andy Stidder. Rothwell Town Manager Rod Dunion made four team changes too the side that went down 2-1 against Chasetown on Saturday as Wilkinson, Greasley, Boyd-Chong and Flannigan were replaced by Burrows, Sneddon, Hacket and Brown in the Bones starting line-up. Early on Maddox's cross from the right was superbly cut out by the flying Dipple who went full stretch to grasp the ball ahead of the incoming DiFante, The Reds failed to capitalise on a well place free kick, after Hicks had uprooted Tolly, Goalkeeper Malong turning the ball over the crossbar.Bones looked like the more likely of the two sides to opening the scoring early on with the Reds enjoying a good late spell, Josh Cole drilling past the near post on the stroke of half time in a first half where clear cut first chances were few and far between. Only a fine stop from Dipple denied Flannigan three minutes after the restart as the goalkeeper pushed his header around the near post.Once more, Reds goalkeeper Dipple kept the Bones out with a flying acrobatic save on 63 as he went horizontal to turn over the crossbar Maddox header while only the woodwork denied the Bones on 70 minutes when David Glass hit the far upright, while two minutes later Tolly long ball was head on by Cudworth which released Harris but from 16 yards out his chipped shot was well by Alex Malong beneath the near upright.Rob Maddox saw his low shot bobble just wide of the far post on 76 minutes after advancing goalkeeper Dipple had narrowed down the angle.Andy Stidder's introduction as a late substitute on 87 minutes could have brought a result, after bursting down the right with only Malong to beat in the Rothwell goal Stidder wasted a guilt edged chance and Malong saved.Rothwell Town were denied a penalty shout on 90 minutes as Byrne try weaved his way through Rowan but ultimately both sides had to settle for a point. Early days for both sides who under there new managers are rebuilding but as both teams take their first point of the season It will probably have been Rod Dunion who will have been less happy of the two managers with the point his side created numerous chances to keeper United goal-keeper Dipple busy throughout the afternoon, A break from league action next weekend see's many of the grass roots midlands teams picking their wits against unknown opposition in the FA Cup and both Managers will be hoping their respective teams can capitalise on a good FA Cup run and in the process add a cash advance too the tune of £1,500 to the clubs bank balance along the way, Next weekend both clubs face FA Cup tests with the Reds hosting Raunds Town while the Bones entertain Hulbridge Swifts, on a breezy Northamptonshire afternoon the new super light weight football's which the BGB Southern League Management Committee have endorsed and introduced this season have not been met with a positive response from the vast majority of teams or players, However Byfield Road won't be an easy hunting ground for visiting clubs this season, but seven days after the new season kicked off the real test for many non league managers is to develop a good side on a shoe-string budget a task that lies ahaed for both Rod Dunion and Mark O'Callaghan will have this season. No complaints from Red boss O.Callagaham about his sides 4-0 drubbinbg at the hands of Chesham United a defeat which was marred by Josh Cole's sending off meanwhile Rod Dunion will have been disappointed not too have picked up more that the solitary point gained from this weekends two encounters. August 23, 2008 BONES BURIED BY TWO LATE GOALS & POOR REFEREEING Rothwell Town 1 Chasetown 2 BGB Midlands Division One Match Report From Cecil Street By Glenn Lawrence
BONES BURIED BY TWO LATE GOALS & POOR REFEREEING.
Two late goals paved the way for Chasetown to take all three points at Cecil Street in a game which will be remembered for its poor controversial Refereeing by a book happy match official who lost the plot and failed to add on some lengthy stoppage time.
Two straight defeats for new Bones boss Rob Dunion means Rothwell Town's new British Gas Business Midlands One campaign has faltered, a late goal on Tuesday night from just two minutes from time denied the Bones a draw and gave visitors Soham Town Rangers all three points following a 2-1 victory at Cecil Street and seven days earlier on the opening day of the season Dunions side endured another loss being well beaten at the hands of newcomers Arsley Town 3-1 which left team-chief Duinon seething following the instant dismals of Robbie Maddox after just 31 minutes. Last Seasons FA heroes Chasetown arrived having beat Barton Rovers in last Saturdays opening Day encounter 2-1 while a similar score-line saw Blakemore's side do down in a scrappy North Warwickshire against Atherstone Town which saw Seven Players booked and one red carded. Scholars boss Charlie Blakemore has earmarked promotion this season - despite acknowledging that the Southern Midlands League is stronger than ever.Chasetown has added more than a dozen players to their squad over the summer for their third tilt at promotion to the Southern Premier, including Gary Birch, Wayne Dyer, Adie Smith and Richard Teesdale. In addition, after just missing out on the play-offs last season, which followed on from a semi-final play-off loss the year before, Blakemore wants no more league heartache. He told The Midlands Media: "I expect us to be up there challenging at the top, our pre-season preparations have been first class.Nuneaton, who have got great resources. In addition, then there are the sides who were in the division already like Chesham and Leamington.Blackmore continued It's going to be tough, but we are really looking forward to the challenge, and we have a real quality side now full of experience tinged with youth" Meantime Chasetown have suffered a set-back, with the news that Midfielder Richard Batchelor could be missing for the rest of the season after sustaining a broken ankle in the 2-1 Midweek defeat at Sheepy Road against Atherstone Town. The news was confirmed after x-rays revealed the extent of the damage to Batchelor ankle which has been broken in several places.Bones had Martin Flannigan available for selection who was named on the replacements bench after completing his transfer from Bedford Town while Danny Marlow was back in contention having fully recovered from an ankle injury However Rothwell were without Fazil Koriya but Robbie Maddox did feature despite a slight doubt over his fitness.Meantime Defender Paul Rice has been loaned to Eagle Bitter United Counties Premiership side Long Buckby for a month to sharpen up his match fitness.Chasetown manager Charlie Blackmore made a number of changes dropping goalkeeper Evans in favour of Price with Ben Steane, Richard Teasdale and the on-loan Harry Harris all include in the visitors starting line-up.
Chasetown forced the early pace going close on a number of occasions early on, Birch heading John Branch's free-kick wide as early as the second minute while Birch turned provider for Danny Smith two minutes later who also failed to capitalise on a good chance.Rothwell Town took the lead on 12 minutes, midfielder Pete Sneddon threading the ball through to Chris Defante, who rounded debuting Scholars keeper Ryan Price to slot home. The hosts could have doubled their lead two minutes later, but Sneddon’s volley sailed over the visitors’ crossbar. The Bones midfielder then fired in a dangerous cross, headed clear by Danny Smith for a corner which was gathered by Price. The new Scholars keeper made further saves from Defante and David Glass, while at the other end Chasetown loanee Walsall Under-19 Harry Harris in place of broken ankle victim Richard Batchelor set up the returning Ben Steane whose right-footed shot just went wide.
The second half began in similar fashion, but Chasetown’s chances seemed to increase when Tony Onokah replaced Birch just past the hour. The home side struck back with a goal being disallowed by referee Marshall for off-side, before on 72 minutes the equaliser emerged as an Onokah sprint set up Dean Perrow, who beat the defence before sending the ball along the six-yard line to skipper John Branch who equalised. Three minutes later the Scholars were awarded a penalty after Perrow was adjudged to have been uprooted by advancing Bones goalkeeper Alex Malong, who was attempting to gather the ball at the feet of Perrow, Malong was then booked; from the resulting spot-kick Perrow fired the Scholars into the lead. In the closing stages Chasetown were left off the hook as the visitors survived a late free kick after John Branch was adjudged to have handled on the 18 yard line the Referee awarding a free kick right on the very edge of the 18 yard area, however Glass’s free kick hit the defensive wall, and the Scholars clung on for victory, in spite of some lengthy stoppages only two minutes of injury time were played.
A disappointing afternoon for Bones fans, Chasetown side who never really got going, and ultimately they craved out a result amid much debate about a penalty was never was and penalty that should have been along a close off-side decision, disappointing result however Bones manager Rob Dunion will have been pleased with his sides performance which he described as "Much Better" following a midweek defeat against Soham Town Rangers, probably the best display I have witnessed from a Bones side in a number of seasons, As for Chasetown well judging by this performance they won't be challenging for title honours with the likes of fancied, Nuneaton Town, Romulus and Leamington. At times this was a scrappy game held up by a match official who never really had control of this game.

August 17, 2008 JELLEY SEES DISAPPOINTING COOKS WOBBLE OUT OF FA CUP AT FIRST HURDLE .jpg) COGENHOE UNITED 0 NORTHAMPTON SPENCER 1 FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round Saturday 16th August 20908 Match Report from Compton Park By Glenn Lawrence
Steve Jelley's 34 minute goal for Eagle Bitter United Counties League side Northampton Spencer saw fellow league opponents Cogenhoe United's interested in this years FA Cup ended at the first hurdle as the Cooks crashed out to a younger Spencer side now under the guidance of newly installed team-chief Rob Gould.
The Road to Wembley started for the grass roots minnows as 761 teams set out today all hoping that by at least 4.45pm some of them would be £750 richer and more Importantly taking their place in the next round, The Reward for today's winners a home tie in the Preliminary Round against Wingate & Finchley in fourteen days time on Saturday August 30th. Midweek encounters saw Cogenhoe United beating Desborough Town 2-0 in a fiery encounter which saw three players red carded while Spencer went down 4-0 against Corby Stewart & Lloyds following a 4-0 away win at Blackstones in their opening Eagle Bitter United Counties Football League Premier Division match last Saturday, while Darren Collins got his Cogenhoe United side back on track on Tuesday night following a narrow 1-0 opening day defeat at Communications Park against the fancied title contenders Daventry Town.Cooks Manager Darren Collins made just one change to his starting line-up as James Le Mesuriar replaced Scott Cross in attack while visitors Northampton Spencer made two changes from the side that went down in Corby as Pete Bulliman replaced Craig Neighbour in goal and Jamie Moss replaced Craig Sampson on the bench, meantime the visitors arrived without.Adam Hancock who was away on a holiday. Meantime Southern League Midlands One Nuneaton Town have secured the services of Rob Foster from Cogenhoe United. Foster scored 33 goals last season for the Cooks and is described as a natural goal scorer by the Cogenhoe United Manager, Darren Collins. Foster finished the season as the UCL league’s joint top scorer, that will be a big lost for Cogenhoe who are getting a reputation for produceing talented Centre Forwards following Steve Diggin's move to Corby Town.
Spencer kick off this FA Cup Tie at Compton Park and within 4 minutes Taylor fired wide of the far post from 18 yards out while only a sprawling to save from Bulliman in the visitors goal denied Goosey who's low short was well smothered following a corner from the left on 17 minutes. The decisive goal coming on 34 minutes as Steve Jelley headed the visitors into the Preliminary Round is downward headed from a yard out sealing victory following a deep cross towards the far by-line which was headed back for Jelley to head home from close range.
Scott Cross headed onto the roof of the Spencer net on 74 minutes following a good cross from Thomason while provider Thomason curled the ball wide of the far post on 90 minutes following Ashton's cross.Cogenhoe United had a penalty shout turned a-side in stoppage time when Cross was bundled over but that appeal fell on deaf ears from an inconsistent referee who through-out the afternoon made some strange decisions amid failing to stop his watch for some lengthy injuries and time wasting. On a disappointing afternoon for the hosts Cogenhoe had Ashby booked after the Referee had blown the final whistle and story of this game like many was summed up by the snub in hospitality of the match officials who throughout the afternoon looked like they were in danger of losing control of a typical local hard fought derby, eight bookings suggested this game could have boiled over various points but a very below par performance from Cogenhoe United means they will have been very disappointed to crash out at the first hurdle to a young Spencer side who never really looked likely to increase their winning margin but take nothing away from Spencer, they battled hard to grind out the right result, Alfie Taylor made some telling runs down the left flank but this performance from Cogenhoe United must rank as the worse I have seen in a number of years they forced Spencer to withhold some pressure towards the end in the hope of snatching something from this cup tie but ultimately they ran out of time.
Perhaps the biggest highlight of the afternoon for any perspective Cogenhoe United talent spotters and supporters in what was otherwise a very poor and disappointing game of football was Cogenhoe's latest signing behind the bar Allison from the Red Lion who I am sure would be a worthwhile acquisition to any Female Football Team should she wish to under take the challenge, see there are some perks to this football reporting, job cannot think of any? Just a shame a forget my flash gun lads! However, judging by some of the stick and banter this Young Lass was having to put up with from a Few of the Cogenhoe regulars was that transfer from the Red Lion a good move? However, moving on, Cooks Manager Darren Collins will need to raise his troops for a midweek encounter against Corby Stewart & Lloyds if they are not to suffer another set back in their early campaign.
